Autumn/Winter 2014

”Once you get up and plant the seed, you have to see if it grows, but you can't just wait around, you have to water it and take care of it.”

The A/W 2014/15 collection is a study on the neat versus the spaced out. The main inspiration derives from P-funk and its aspirational music, and science fiction funk aesthetics meets a composed silhouette. Come autumn/winter, we will work on letting go of too much control, and just turn on, tune in and drop out.

The silhouette is slim without being tight, and both trousers and skirts come with a slight flare. Softly tailored suits in brocade and embossed lycra are adorned with tie bands at the waist, and HZCT-tour prints are shown both on tops and long tees. Floor length dresses mixes with mini shift ones, and the composite collection is built as a small wardrobe where each piece is equally important.

S.O.A. Sort of Adolescent
Autumn/Winter 2013

The heroes of the A/W 2013/14 collection read like the supernova cast for an A-list teenage movie. Starring: Nina Ricci, Kate Moss, Leonardo DiCaprio, Winona Ryder, Lindsay Lohan, Anna Nicole Smith, Britney Spears and Drew Barrymore. As these names imply, we are leaving the realms of high-school love affairs and enter a darker zone of contemplation and rivalry. Our heroes, as we will soon find out, are fighting battles not with others but within themselves.

We are drawn deep into the psyche of these teenage idols that refuse a totalitarian idea of adulthood. Instead, their forever-young faces, curious minds and naïve fashion choices expose an inner child, a ’weaker self’ that sees the world differently – that is, more seriously. Layered, complex looks and tactile qualities reveal the constant struggle for identity and a certain sense of social criticism. They wrap themselves in soft fleece jumpers when they cry; they wear too-short skirts and kick-flare trousers at school; they pair polyester mermaid dresses with dad's dinner jacket for a midnight gas station date; and they wear nothing when they take a bath to slit their wrists.

It’s a serious story, not a sad one. It’s a dramatic story, but with a happy ending. And it’s a story of love. Of loving yourself. The collection is the wearable soundtrack to this story. Garments to wear when we steal, dance, cry, fight, sleep and make love.

CODES OF CONSTRUCTION
Spring/Summer 2013

The summer of 2013 will be as fundamental and mentally challenging as our final year in high school. But instead of mathematics or history class, we will graduate in discipline.

The best Hernández Cornet collection yet is the repellent reaction of an underdog. Deeply affected by the sartorial codes of MTV, it is an experiment in workwear, baggy jeans and denim bras. Yet, these fashionable images of street credibility are programmatically rebuilt: dungarees are worn as dresses endorsed with delicate thin straps, overalls are made of sheer crystal organza and PVC. Aprons become luxurious gowns and pocket details functions as portable designer bags.

While the garments feel familiar and their construction remains identical, the qualities are replaced. Denimwear without denim. Utility without function. Materials without substance. A study of anti-suburbia that creates its own status symbols: the iconic Hernández Cornet logo appearing as a signature front print for the ever-hungry class of ’13.

DÉJÀ VU
Autumn/Winter 2012

Deja vu is a collection built on repetition. Starting point and core of the creative process is a personal library of references, collected within the past years of the multicontextual Hernández Cornet label.

The collection inhabits a strong element of self-analysis and the return to unfinished, unspoken, yet unrealized ideas that are dear to the designer’s heart. Déjà vu expresses this vague notion of ‘having seen it before’ as well as the almost compulsive urge as a designer to repeat oneself. Unnecessarily and necessarily.

As the collection is driven by the obsession for repetition, it centres on a handful of classic, almost historic, garment types duplicated in different qualities and executions: trench coat, biker jacket and 1940’s flight jacket are reworked in wool, leather and cotton. While the outer appearance varies, they still maintain their specific, recognizable form. Concomitantly, apron dresses recur in both PVC and printed poplin, accessorized with hoods and quilted backpacks.

Déjà vu?
CORRUPTED
Spring/Summer 2012

The collection Corrupted seeks inspiration from the controlled and artificial nature, from bonsai trees and constructed gardens to 3d nature. Restraint and the will to control manifest itself through the removal of usual details and adornment, and pristine qualities meets tampered materials. Garment in austere linen, leather, silk and denim are punctuated with piping in reflex, and there is a slight sense of controlled violence where garments have been slit open.

The corrupted versus the natural.

HERNÁNDEZ CORNET
Founded 2008, Hernández Cornet has slowly and consistently worked on building a platform and creating a language of its own.

With inspiration deriving from contrasts, both the drama and dullness of modern life is translated into collections with a wide range of themes such as self-analysis, teen idols, and corrupted nature. There is an interesting tension play between the opposites; high and low, chintzy and exclusive- but the result is always poised and balanced.

HZCT speaks a serious language of understated strength, but always with a streak of intelligent humour. Collections can evolve around utility without function, denimwear without denim and science fiction funk, keeping silhouettes elementary but constantly defining them with each season.
